Designing an Expressive Avatar of a Real Person

چکیده
The human ability to express and recognize emotions plays an important role in face-to-face communication, and as technology advances it will be increasingly important for computer-generated avatars to be similarly expressive. In this paper, we present the detailed development process for the Lifelike Responsive Avatar Framework (LRAF) and a prototype application for modeling a specific individual to analyze the e ectiveness of expressive avatars. In particular, the goals of our pilot study (n 1,744) are to determine whether the specific avatar being developed is capable of conveying emotional states (Ekmans six classic emotions) via facial features and whether a realistic avatar is an appropriate vehicle for conveying the emotional states accompanying spoken information. The results of this study show that happiness and sadness are correctly identified with a high degree of accuracy while the other four emotional states show mixed results. Fig. 1. Abstract Controlling Expressive Avatar Gesture
Controlling Expressive Avatar Gesture by Francesca A. Barrientos Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science University of California, Berkeley Professor John F. Canny, Chair An avatar represents a person and functions as that person’s virtual body within a virtual space. Just as a person can use gesture and other bodily movements to communicate nonverbally in the real world, so too can a person u...
متن کاملThe Role of Avatar in Interactive Fictional World of Video Games
In third-person video games, players are able to move and progress in the interactive world of the game while watching their avatar from an external point of view. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of avatar in the interactive imaginary world of video games using double vision theory. This article is based on descriptive-analytical methods and the use of library data and imag...
متن کاملBeyond the Listening Test: An Interactive Approach to TTS Evaluation
Traditionally, subjective text-to-speech (TTS) evaluation is performed through audio-only listening tests, where participants evaluate unrelated, context-free utterances. The ecological validity of these tests is questionable, as they do not represent real-world end-use scenarios. In this paper, we examine a novel approach to TTS evaluation in an imagined end-use, via a complex interaction with...
متن کاملTelMeA: An Asynchronous Community System with Avatar-like Agents
In this paper, we propose an asynchronous community system named TelMeA, which employs avatarlike agents, or scriptable animated agents, as the conversation interface. Few of current online community systems are close to real communities both in reality and in functions. We show with the proposed system that online community can be more like our real community in awareness of participants and o...
متن کاملInertial Sensor-Based Touch and Shake Metaphor for Expressive Control of 3D Virtual Avatars
In this paper, we present an inertial sensor-based touch and shake metaphor for expressive control of a 3D virtual avatar in a virtual environment. An intuitive six degrees-of-freedom wireless inertial motion sensor is used as a gesture and motion control input device with a sensor fusion algorithm. The algorithm enables user hand motions to be tracked in 3D space via magnetic, angular rate, an...
